Dear PAMLE!
I am a filmmaker who spent a year embedded in a public middle school in New York City, and made a documentary called Changing By The Minute, that is part of a larger tool kit including a 10min short film, discussion guides, and bonus material. The goal of the project is to help reverse the narrative of early adolescence as a negative time — and support teachers in decreasing the stress and distress experienced by 10–14-year-olds.
As a parent of a tween, I had been confused and concerned about how to cope with this developmental time. It had not occurred to me that the most effective and meaningful approach could be to embrace the messiness of these years with joy, flexibility, and deep acceptance that each day is a new day. But, I learned that from this school — and thought others would be interested to see how that plays out day to day.
But perhaps even more importantly, the film is not just a window into the school — it is a view into the daily lives of early adolescents, featuring authentic, unfiltered interactions between students and commentary from them. This chance to hear directly from 10–14-year-olds makes the film a powerful resource for:
It was terrific working with middle level education professors Penny Bishop, Lisa Harrison (current AMLE Board of Trustees Chair), and Cheryl Ellerbrock as consultants on the films and the discussion guides. (Penny and Lisa are also the authors of AMLE's The Successful Middle School: This We Believe.) You will recognize their thoughtful contributions in the documentary materials.
The tool kit was launched this September with Success Bound who is using the materials with 200 public schools in Chicago, and Youth-Nex Remaking Middle School program at the University of Virginia. I am hoping the materials will make their way into colleges, universities, middle schools, PTAs, and after school programs around the country.
Lots of info on the website - trailer, endorsements, educational sales information, place to request a screener. Feel free to write me with any questions.
